How to turn off auto-screen rotation in Windows 10

If you have a tablet or convertible device with gyroscope and accelerometer sensors, installed with Windows 10, then your screen will rotate automatically no matter how you position it. Want to turn off this feature? Here is how.

How to turn off auto screen rotation from Action Center

1.    Press ‘Windows + A’ key on the keyboard to open Action Center. You can also click the Action Center icon in the taskbar.

2.    Click the ‘Rotation lock’ tile.

The auto-screen rotation will turn off, if the button does not appear, click the ‘Expand’ icon at the top of the quick action area. If still, you’re not getting the option, then may be the feature is not available in your device. Try the below steps to add the button:

1.    Open ‘Settings’ in your Windows 10 device.

2.    Select ‘System.’

3.    Then select ‘Notification & actions’.

4.    Click ‘Add or remove quick actions.’

5.    Look for the ‘Rotation lock.’

6.    Click and turn on the toggle switch of ‘Rotation lock.’

7.    Now, disable the auto screen rotation.

Once you have done this, the screen of your Windows 10 device will not change its orientation when you rotate it.

How to turn off auto screen rotation from Windows 10 settings

You can open settings app to disable the auto- rotation feature, use the below steps to disable screen rotation from settings.

1.    Open ‘Start menu.’

2.    Go to ‘Settings.’

3.    Open ‘Display’ from System.

4.    Under the Display window, look for the Rotation lock.

5.    Click and turn off the toggle switch of ‘Rotation lock.’

If you don’t get this option in your Windows 10, it means your device doesn’t support the feature.

Once you have done this, the screen of your Windows 10 device will not change its orientation when you rotate it.

How to turn off auto screen rotation from Registry

Alternatively, you can modify the Registry of your Windows 10 device to turn off auto screen rotation. From registry, you can also prevent your device screen from coming to portrait mode. Here is how to modify the registry in Windows 10.

Note: Modifying Registry will be risky, create a backup of your device before proceeding.

1.    Launch ‘Start.’

2.    Enter ‘regedit’ in the search bar.

3.    And press ‘Enter.’

4.    Click ‘Registry’ at the top of the result.

5.    Now, browse for the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation

You can directly copy the path and paste it in the address bar of Registry.

6.    In the open window, double click on ‘Enable.’

7.    Change the value from 1 to 0 in the Edit DWORD pop-up window.

8.    Click ‘OK.’

9.    Now, restart your device.

Once you have done this, the screen of your Windows 10 device will not change its orientation when you rotate it. If you want to revert changes follow the same steps and change the value from 0 to 1.
